Lead Estimator – Electrical Construction

OlympiaTech is looking for an experienced Lead Estimator to oversee the estimating department. This position will require estimating projects of diverse sizes and concept including design build, plan, and spec, as well as GMP, budgets and RFPs.

General Responsibilities:

  • Estimating of both design/build as well as plan and spec projects with an emphasis on design build.
  • Work with distributors and subcontractors to obtain information for inclusion into bids.
  • Utilize value engineering when needed or deemed appropriate to the bid process.
  • Conceptually understand the project and the desired end use.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Oversee the functions of the estimating department.
  • Provide value engineering when needed or deemed appropriate to the bid process.
  • Attend post bid interviews and collaborate with business development group to determine and prepare post bid deliverables.
  • Review electrical estimates prepared by members of the estimating team for completeness and review with the executive team to determine appropriate markups, exclusions, inclusions, etc.
  • Evaluate labor and material costs to determine whether it is more feasible to construct electrical components or sub-contract the construction of components (prefab).
  • Define opportunities and potential risks for projects being bid on. Provide information to the business development team and executive team to determine “go-no-go” of potential projects.
  • Meet with the leadership group monthly to discuss big picture items.
  • Hold daily huddles with estimating team along with the business development team and company executives, when available.
  • Help mentor and train estimators on software, tips & tricks, etc.
  • Collaborate with the business development group to identify potential leads and or target markets to pursue.
  • Update and maintain the ConEst software program to accurately reflect fluctuating material and labor cost. Improve assemblies to increase efficiency in estimating.
  • Work with distributors and subcontractors to obtain more competitive pricing levels.
  • Help identify and strengthen relationships with manufacturer’s representatives and vendors.
  • Continually refine processes to improve cost-estimating procedures reducing inconsistencies between estimated and actual cost.
  • Maintain understanding of current electrical and energy codes and provide education opportunities to the team.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read architectural, structural, and electrical plans and specifications and be familiar with a variety of electrical systems and terminology.
  • Ability to prepare electrical construction cost estimates and construction schedules.
  • Knowledge of computer database management, word processing, scheduling, and software applications.
  • Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Possess strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Possess strong people skills.
  • Initiative-taking; requires little direct supervision.

Experience Requirements:

This position requires a BS in construction management, electrical engineering, or other education/experience by which an understanding of electrical systems has been gained and a minimum of eight years of experience in electrical construction. The ability to use computer-based estimating software is also required. Knowledge of ConEst is a plus.
